Time Travel at Prairie Woods

You've wondered what it would be like to step back in time, right? Now you can experience that very thing during a Prairie Woods "Time Travel" program. This is living history at its best.

Imagine stepping back to 1888. Your whole group will undergo a transformation as you put on period costumes and new names, and pay a visit to the Danielson homestead in 1888. The whole family is busy preparing for a new arrival from Sweden. . . and you've arrived just in time to help out!

The Pioneer Time Travel program at PWELC includes a pioneer lunch, as well as activities ranging from fishing, washing, cooking, making old-fashioned toys, and learning a welcome song with a dance.

Bring your students for a 4-hour day visit to experience 1888 in person. The program includes period costumes and lunch.

Native Cultures programs

People have been living on and caring for this land for thousands of years.

The American Indian History Village consists of reconstructed dwellings representing cultures 8,000 years ago, 3,000 years ago, and 500 years ago. Students also have the opportunity to experience a Historic-era tipi.

During our Native Cultures program, groups learn about lifeways of humans through a long course of history. Try your hand at atlatl spear-throwers, starting a fire with flint and steel, and making toys from cattails.

Students will gain a new perspective on land-use and history through the Native Cultures program.

Special thanks to the Southwest Initiative Foundation, United Way of Kandiyohi County, and the American Swedish Institute for making the Time Travel program possible.
